If you've sold an Intel MacBook before, the Apple Silicon process is much simpler — but skipping any of the iCloud sign-outs will leave the buyer locked out by Activation Lock. Here's the bullet-proof checklist.

Step 1 — Back up with Time Machine or iCloud

Plug in any external drive, open System Settings → General → Time Machine → Add Backup Disk. Wait for the first full backup. Alternatively, ensure iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos have completed syncing in System Settings → [Your name] → iCloud.

Step 2 — Sign out of iMessage

Open Messages → Settings → iMessage tab → Sign Out. Then quit Messages.

Step 4 — Use Erase All Content and Settings

Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and newer) have a one-click reset:

    1. System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings. 2. Authenticate with your password. 3. Sign out of Apple ID when prompted. 4. Confirm the erase. The Mac will reboot and arrive at the 'Hello' setup screen.

Step 5 — Reinstall macOS (only if needed)

If 'Erase All Content and Settings' isn't available (older Intel MacBook), shut down → hold Cmd-R → release at the Apple logo → Disk Utility → erase Macintosh HD as APFS → quit Disk Utility → Reinstall macOS.

Step 6 — Final physical check

Wipe fingerprints from the screen and palm rest, include the original charger, and confirm the serial on the bottom case matches the box. These tiny touches earn you the top of the quoted price band.

    Frequently asked

What if I forgot to sign out of iCloud before erasing?

Sign in to iCloud.com → Find Devices → select the Mac → 'Remove from Account'. The buyer can then complete setup normally.

Does 'Erase All Content and Settings' work on Intel MacBooks?

Only on T2-chip Intel models running macOS Monterey or later. Older Intel MacBooks need the Cmd-R Recovery method described above.
