We run a full-screen pixel test at the native 4480 by 2520 resolution, check backlight uniformity on a grey field, test every Thunderbolt and USB-C port with a live SSD and an external display, check the camera, the six-speaker system and the microphones, confirm Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ethernet where fitted, and test the Magic Keyboard, Touch ID where present and the Magic Mouse. Then the drive is erased and a fresh macOS installed with Activation Lock off.

The grade describes cosmetics only, because every unit has to pass the same checks to be sold. Grade A shows no marks at arm's length, Grade B has light wear on the chassis or stand, Grade C has visible marks but an unmarked display. The grade is photographed on the actual iMac.
