On the lower end of our stock you are typically looking at MacBook Airs a couple of generations old, often with cosmetic wear such as light marks on the lid or edge dings, but with working batteries and clean logic boards. They run current macOS, handle Safari, Office, Zoom and Photos without complaint, and last a working day on a charge when the battery reading is healthy. For students, second devices, homework laptops or anyone who just needs a Mac that works, they are unbeatable value.

The honest trade-offs at this tier

Cheaper units tend to have higher battery cycle counts, which our battery screenshot always shows, more cosmetic wear and less storage, typically 256GB. None of these affect day-to-day use for normal tasks, but if you edit 4K video or need 1TB of local storage, you will want to spend more. The oldest MacBooks still worth buying, and what they lack

The oldest MacBook we list is the M2 Air, and it is still a very good laptop. What it lacks compared with newer Airs is worth knowing before you buy. The base M2 came with 8GB of memory, where the M4 moved to 16GB as standard. It drives one external display, while the M3 and later can run two. Its camera is 1080p, without the Center Stage framing of the M4. Wi-Fi is Wi-Fi 6 rather than the faster 6E on the M3. None of that matters for essays, browsing and streaming. It matters if you plan to run two monitors or heavy apps, so tell us your setup in the quote form.

What tested and graded means for a cheap MacBook

Every cheap MacBook is opened on our bench in Dubai Media City before it is listed. We run Apple Diagnostics, test the display for dead pixels and backlight bleed, press every key, check the trackpad click and Force Touch, test each port with a real drive and charger, play the speakers, record on the microphones, and confirm the camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Touch ID. Then the drive is erased and a fresh macOS installed with Activation Lock off.

The grade describes cosmetics only, because every unit has to pass the same checks to be sold at all. Grade A shows no marks at arm's length, Grade B has light wear such as faint scuffs, Grade C has visible marks on the lid or base. The grade is photographed on the actual unit, not just described.

What you see before you pay for a cheap MacBook

Before you pay for a cheap MacBook we send, on WhatsApp, photos of the exact unit, its serial number and a screenshot of its battery screen. With them we give the chip, memory, storage and screen size, the macOS version, the cosmetic grade and what is in the box. We open the battery section of the macOS System Report on the bench and send you a screenshot of it, showing maximum capacity and cycle count. Apple designs MacBook batteries to keep up to 80 percent of their original capacity at their rated cycle count, so a unit reading below that is described plainly as a worn battery, never hidden. What is in the box with a cheap MacBook

The MacBook itself and a charger of the correct wattage for the model, tested with the machine. The original Apple box is included only when the previous owner kept it, and we tell you on WhatsApp whether it is there. Cases, adapters and dongles are not included unless we name them.
