The Pro chips suit most professional work: 4K editing, app development, music production, design and data work all run comfortably on an M3 Pro or M4 Pro, and the battery lasts longer under light loads. The Max chips earn their place when the GPU and memory bandwidth are the bottleneck: 8K or multicam timelines, heavy colour grading, 3D rendering in Blender or Cinema 4D, and running large local language models, which want as much unified memory as you can get. Max machines also drive more external displays. If your exports already finish while you make coffee, a Max adds weight and cost without changing your day. What tested and graded means for a used MacBook Pro

Beyond Apple Diagnostics with no warnings, every Pro gets a hands-on bench check. All Thunderbolt ports are tested with a live SSD and an external 4K display, the HDMI port is verified, and the SD card reader is tested with a real card. The Magic Keyboard backlight must be even and every key must register. Force Touch on the trackpad is checked, the speakers are played at full volume for buzz, and the ProMotion display is run through test patterns for dead pixels and backlight bleed. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the FaceTime camera, the microphones and Touch ID are all confirmed, then the drive is erased and a fresh macOS installed.

The grade covers cosmetics only: Grade A shows no marks at arm's length, Grade B has light wear, Grade C has visible marks. Every grade has passed the same checks.
