'Activation Lock' is Apple's anti-theft feature. It's tied to your Apple ID, and it survives a factory reset. Disable it before selling, every time, no exceptions.

    On iPhone or iPad

Settings → [Your name] → Find My → Find My iPhone → toggle off → enter your Apple ID password.

    On MacBook

Apple menu → System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → scroll to Find My Mac → toggle off → enter password.

If you already sold the device

Sign in to iCloud.com → Find My → All Devices → select the device → 'Remove from Account'. Tell the buyer to power-cycle, and Activation Lock will release within minutes.
