Selling an iPhone without a proper reset is one of the most common — and most damaging — mistakes UAE resident sellers make. A buyer who later resets the device with your iCloud credentials still attached can lock the phone permanently, and you're left explaining things to FIA. This guide walks you through a buyer-safe, seller-safe reset.

Step 1 — Back up everything

Open Settings → [Your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. Wait for the backup to complete before continuing. If you have less than 5 GB of free iCloud space, plug into a Mac or PC and back up via Finder/iTunes instead.

Step 2 — Sign out of iMessage and FaceTime

Settings → Messages → toggle off iMessage. Settings → FaceTime → toggle off. This prevents the buyer from receiving your messages and avoids the 'I'm not getting iMessages' problem if you switch to Android.

Step 3 — Disable Find My iPhone

Settings → [Your name] → Find My → Find My iPhone → toggle off. You'll need your Apple ID password. This step is non-negotiable — without it, the buyer cannot activate the phone after reset.

Step 4 — Sign out of Apple ID

Settings → [Your name] → scroll to the bottom → Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password to confirm.

    Step 5 — Remove eSIM

Settings → Cellular → tap your eSIM line → Remove eSIM. If you skip this, the buyer inherits your eSIM line which can be a privacy and billing nightmare.

Step 6 — Erase all content and settings

Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. The phone will reboot and start at the 'Hello' screen, exactly as it shipped.

Step 7 — Wipe the box and accessories

Remove the SIM tray with the included pin, clean the lightning/USB-C port, and confirm the IMEI on the box matches the device. This single check eliminates 90% of disputes after sale.

    Frequently asked

What if I forgot to disable Find My before selling?

Sign in to iCloud.com from any device, go to Find My, select the iPhone and click 'Remove from Account'. The buyer can then activate normally.

Will resetting delete my photos from iCloud?

No. Reset only wipes the local device. Your iCloud Photos library remains intact and accessible from any signed-in Apple device.
