Before you sell your MacBook in the UAE, do six things: back it up, sign out of every Apple service, turn off Find My, erase it to DoD standard, check the battery, and gather the box and charger. Done in order, this protects your data, clears Activation Lock so the buyback isn't blocked, and lifts your final AED offer. Here's the full checklist.

The pre-sale checklist at a glance

Skipping these steps is the number-one reason a MacBook sale stalls at pickup — an Activation Lock that won't clear, or data still on the drive. Work through them top to bottom and the handover takes minutes.

    • Back up to Time Machine or iCloud
    • Sign out of iCloud, iMessage and Apple Music
    • Turn off Find My (clears Activation Lock)
    • Erase All Content & Settings (or let us wipe it free)
    • Check battery health and cycle count
    • Gather the box, charger and any accessories
    • Get a written AED quote and time the sale

    1. Back up your Mac first

Everything after this erases your data, so back up before you do anything else. On Apple Silicon and recent Intel Macs, Time Machine to an external drive is the fastest full backup; iCloud covers documents, photos and desktop if you're short on hardware.

If you're moving to a new Mac, use Migration Assistant after the backup — it carries apps, files and settings across so you're not starting from scratch.

    2. Sign out of iCloud, iMessage and Apple Music

Sign out of iCloud in System Settings → your name → Sign Out. Then sign out of iMessage (Messages → Settings → iMessage) and deauthorise the Mac in Apple Music (Account → Authorisations → Deauthorise This Computer) — you only get a limited number of authorisations, so reclaiming this one matters.

    3. Turn off Find My & Activation Lock

This is the step buyers care about most. Signing out of iCloud turns off Find My and releases Activation Lock — without it, your MacBook can't be reset or resold, and a cash buyback can't complete. We always verify Activation Lock is off at pickup, so clearing it in advance keeps the collection quick.

    4. Erase your MacBook — or let us do it free

Once you're backed up and signed out, erase the Mac. On Apple Silicon and T2 Macs, use Erase All Content & Settings in System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset — it wipes the drive securely in minutes. Prefer to hand it over as-is? SellYourMac.ae runs a DoD 5220.22-M certified erase on every device before resale, with a certificate on request.

    5. Check your battery health and cycle count

Battery condition is one of the biggest levers on a MacBook's value. Check the cycle count in System Settings → General → About → System Report → Power. Under 300 cycles holds full value; a swollen or heavily-cycled battery lowers the offer but the Mac is still bought. Knowing the number up front gets you an accurate quote.

    6. Gather the box, charger and accessories

A complete-in-box MacBook with its original charger and packaging is worth more than a bare unit — chargers in particular are expensive to source separately. Dig out the box, the MagSafe or USB-C charger, and any adapters before pickup.

    7. Time the sale and get a written quote

MacBook resale values fall 8–15% in the 30 days after Apple announces a new model, so sell before the keynote, not after. Get a written AED quote first: SellYourMac.ae offers start from AED 150 and rise with chip, storage, RAM and condition, and the quote is locked for 30 days. The exact figure is confirmed free at pickup.

    Frequently asked

What should I do before selling my MacBook in the UAE?

Back up, sign out of iCloud/iMessage/Apple Music, turn off Find My, erase the Mac, check the battery, and gather the box and charger — then get a written quote.

Do I have to erase my MacBook before selling it?

Back up and sign out first. You can erase it yourself via Erase All Content & Settings, or hand it over and we run a DoD 5220.22-M certified wipe for free.

Why won't my MacBook reset before selling?

Almost always Activation Lock. Sign out of iCloud (which turns off Find My) before the reset, or the Mac stays locked and can't be resold.

Does battery health affect my MacBook's value?

Yes. A low cycle count holds full value; a swollen or heavily-cycled battery lowers the offer, though the MacBook is still bought. Check it in System Report → Power.

When is the best time to sell a MacBook?

Before Apple's next announcement — resale values typically drop 8–15% in the 30 days after a new MacBook launches.
